I shut the windows, and looked round for a box of matches.	Я закрыла окна и оглянулась в поисках спичек.
I could not find one.	Их нигде не было видно.
I wondered what I should do.	Как мне быть, подумала я.
I did not like to ring.	Звонить мне не хотелось.
But the library, so snug and warm last night with the burning logs, was like an ice-house now, in the early morning.	Но библиотека, где было так уютно и тепло от пылающих поленьев вчера вечером, сейчас напоминала ледник.
There were matches upstairs in the bedroom, but I did not like to go for them because it would mean disturbing the housemaids at their work.	Наверху, в спальне, у меня были спички, но я не хотела идти туда, чтобы снова не помешать горничным.
I could not bear their moon faces staring at me again.	Я не могла вынести их изумленных взглядов.
I decided that when Frith and Robert had left the dining-room I would fetch the matches from the sideboard.	Я решила, что возьму спички с буфета, когда Фрис и Роберт уйдут из столовой.
I tiptoed out into the hall and listened.	Я вошла на цыпочках в холл и прислушалась.
They were still clearing, I could hear the sound of voices, and the movement of trays.	Они все еще убирали со стола, мне были слышны их голоса и позвякивание посуды.
Presently all was silent, they must have gone through the service doors into the kitchen quarters, so I went across the hall and into the dining-room once more.	Но вот все стихло, видимо, они ушли через черную дверь в служебные помещения, и я направилась через холл в столовую.
Yes, there was a box of matches on the sideboard, as I expected.	Да, на буфете, как я и ожидала, лежали спички.
I crossed the room quickly and picked them up, and as I did so Frith came back into the room.	Я пересекла комнату и взяла коробок, и в этот момент вошел Фрис.
I tried to cram the box furtively into my pocket, but I saw him glance at my hand in surprise.	Я попыталась было сунуть коробок украдкой в карман, но увидела, что он удивленно глядит на мою руку.
'Did you require anything, Madam?' he said.	- Вам что-нибудь нужно, мадам? - спросил он.
'Oh, Frith,' I said awkwardly, 'I could not find any matches.'	- О, Фрис, - сконфуженно сказала я, - я не могла найти спички.
He at once proffered me another box, handing me the cigarettes too, at the same time.	Он тут же протянул мне другой коробок и одновременно сигарету.
This was another embarrassment, for I did not smoke.	Это привело меня в еще большее замешательство, так как я не курю.
'No, the fact is,' I said, 'I felt rather cool in the library, I suppose the weather seems chilly to me, after being abroad and I thought perhaps I would just put a match to the fire.'	- Спасибо, но дело в том, что я немного озябла в библиотеке. Мне, вероятно, кажется холодно после теплых стран, вот я решила разжечь камин.
'The fire in the library is not usually lit until the afternoon, Madam,' he said.	- В библиотеке камин разжигают обычно только во второй половине дня, мадам, - сказал он.
'Mrs de Winter always used the morning-room.	- Миссис де Уинтер всегда шла утром в кабинет.
There is a good fire in there.	Там в камине уже давно горит огонь.
